Managing equine asthma – how it works
Severe asthma is a real problem, as stable dust can never be completely avoided. A recent study once again proves that soaking hay is an effective way to control severe asthma in horses.
The study compared lung function and symptoms in horses fed either pelleted roughage or hay soaked in water for 45 minutes. The result: soaked hay significantly improved mucus accumulation in the trachea, lung function and symptoms (Westerfeld et al., 2024).
marstall tips:
- Always prepare fresh, as soaked hay can grow mould.
- Always compensate for nutrient losses caused by soaking! The test horses lost significant weight when fed soaked hay. You can find detailed information on this in our specialist article.
