Essential
A substance described as essential cannot be produced by the body of an animal or human itself, so must instead be supplied in sufficient quantities through the diet. Well-known examples are essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and threonine, or essential fatty acids such as the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid.
