Fat
Fats are energy-rich compounds made up of glycerol and fatty acids. They can be solid or liquid (fatty oils) at room temperature. Animals and plants form their own body fats as an energy reserve. In animal nutrition, fat is a valuable source of energy.
For horses, feeding high-quality fats or oils is particularly important when they are used in competitive sport or cannot cover their energy requirements via starch-rich grain due to an intolerance. Horses can digest fat relatively well. However, an upper limit of 1 g fat per kg body weight in the total daily ration should not be exceeded. In addition, the daily amount of fat fed should be increased slowly to the desired amount.
