Fibre
Fibre is a carbohydrate such as cellulose. It serves the horse as a source of energy but does not cause strong fluctuations in blood sugar levels (low glycaemic). It stimulates gut motility and so improves the passage of the food pulp through the gut. In this way, it contributes to the transport of other important nutrients.
The butyric acid produced by microorganisms during the digestion of fibre is also the main energy source for beneficial gut cells. In this way, fibre supports the natural function of the gut flora, digestion in general and the gut biome.
