Overview I
Insulin sensitivity
Insulin sensitivity refers to the responsiveness of the body’s cells, or insulin receptors, to insulin. If the cells respond normally well to insulin, insulin sensitivity is high. If it is reduced, this is referred to as insulin resistance.
In overweight horses, and in horses with obesity, EMS or a predisposition to laminitis, insulin resistance is often, though not always, present. The aim in these horses is to increase insulin sensitivity again. This is possible, for example, through daily, regular exercise. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking can have an effect.
