Ad libitum
Ad libitum translates as “freely available”. In horse feeding, it means that roughage such as hay is offered for feeding around the clock in unlimited quantities. This avoids long gaps between feeds, which put strain on the horse’s stomach. In good doers, however, there is a risk that they gain too much weight.
