Anthocyanins
Anthocyanins (also anthocyanidins) are a subgroup of flavonoids and therefore belong to the colouring secondary plant compounds. They give flowers and foods their bluish, purple, dark blue colouring, as seen for example in aubergines, elderberries, chokeberries, red cabbage, red grapes, etc.
In the body, they have an antioxidative effect. This means they bind free radicals and thereby help protect DNA and membrane lipids from damage.
They are also attributed with supporting natural visual processes and vascular functions. A positive effect of grape marc in the gut was demonstrated by Gessner et al., 2013.
