Oats
Oats are traditionally regarded as the classic horse grain in Europe. With their high husk content and their size, oats are generally chewed thoroughly by horses and, even without special preparation, are highly digestible up to the end of the small intestine and provide a fast source of energy. Rolled oats should be fed to senior horses with reduced chewing ability and to foals.
Oats are rich in minerals (potassium, magnesium and phosphorous), vitamins (vitamin B, vitamin E), trace elements (zinc, selenium, iron) and contain valuable proteins. Oats have a pleasantly sweet taste and are therefore very readily eaten by horses. With a carbohydrate content of 59% (predominantly starch digestible in the small intestine) and 7% fat, they provide almost twice as much energy as the same amount of hay.
