Trace elements
Trace elements are minerals that are supplied through the daily diet. They are frequently a key component of hormones and enzymes and are therefore involved in a wide range of metabolic processes and functions in the body. Not all of their functions are known yet.
Trace elements occur in the body only in small amounts, quite literally in traces. They include iron, iodine, copper, fluorine, zinc, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum, chromium, selenium, boron, tin, vanadium and silicon. For the trace elements relevant to horse feeding (iron, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine and selenium), the GfE (Gesellschaft für Ernährung) provides dietary recommendations. Based on these recommendations, feed is supplemented with trace elements to cover the horses’ daily requirements.
