Magnesium
Magnesium activates many metabolic enzymes. It is essential for energy provision and for muscle relaxation. The horse’s performance and how quickly it recovers are closely linked to its magnesium supply.
Magnesium also plays an important role, alongside calcium, in skeletal development. Approximately 60 percent of the magnesium contained in the body is found in the bones.
In horses, magnesium deficiency manifests itself, for example, in muscle cramps and tension or neuronal hyperexcitability. The daily magnesium requirement of a warmblood is approximately 6 grams. Due to increased sweating or stress, the horse’s magnesium requirement rises, particularly in competition and sport horses, pregnant mares, horses under transport stress, or those with diarrhoea.
Late-cut hay that is low in leaves and coarse-stemmed usually no longer covers the magnesium requirement. In this case, a good mineral feed should be used to compensate.
