Turmeric
Turmeric (curcuma), also known as Javanese ginger, is a Southeast Asian plant species from the ginger family. Its active compounds (primarily curcuminoids) are contained in the underground-growing rhizome. Turmeric is characterised by its distinctive yellow colour, which is why it has been used not only as a spice and medicinal herb but also as a colouring agent. For example, turmeric gives curry powder its yellow colour and “golden milk” its golden appearance.
Some properties of turmeric have been scientifically studied. It has been shown to support digestion and improve bile secretion, for example. According to scientific findings, turmeric is also a free-radical scavenger and has antioxidant properties.
Of particular interest in horse feeding is the fact that turmeric stimulates saliva production, which buffers stomach acid. Turmeric also has a pleasant taste and stimulates the appetite. Turmeric is contained in marstall Senior-Aktiv and Kurkuma-Gold.
