Copper
The trace element copper is important for the formation and regeneration of collagen fibres (connective tissue) in bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and skin. Copper is a component of many enzymes and is therefore involved in many enzyme-mediated processes. It is required for blood formation, immune defence and the development of nerves and pigments (coat colouring). Large amounts of copper are stored in the liver. There, the foal stores copper reserves while still in the womb, so that its body can, for example, “repair” the joints quickly from the outset. The daily requirement of an adult horse (warmblood) is approximately 105 to 120 mg. An adequate copper supply is particularly important for heavily pregnant mares, foals and young horses.
