Overview M
Manganese
Manganese is an essential trace element with many functions in the body and is vital for life. It is required for the formation of bones, cartilage and connective tissue, as well as for the production of melanin (skin pigment) and dopamine (a messenger substance in the brain). Manganese also activates many enzymes in sugar and fat metabolism and is essential for ovarian function.
For a warmblood, a daily intake of 425 to 545 mg manganese is recommended. As a rule, horses take in sufficient manganese with grass or hay. Manganese deficiency, particularly in sport horses or animals with liver disease, can be well compensated for with a feed supplement. Horses with PSSM can also partly benefit from a manganese supplement.
