Base
Bases are all compounds that form hydroxide ions, i.e. OH-, in aqueous solution and are therefore able to take up H+ ions. They can raise the pH value of a solution or neutralise acids. Examples of such basic substances in the body are bicarbonate (HCO3-) in the blood buffer system and sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3-) in saliva.
Bases are corrosive and destroy plant-based and organic substances. There are strong and weak bases. The “counterparts” of bases are acids. They can neutralise or buffer bases.
