Bicarbonate
Sodium hydrogen carbonate is a buffering substance in horse saliva. This is produced during chewing and serves to make the mouthful ready for swallowing and to “alkalise” the stomach contents. This means that buffering bicarbonate is continually swallowed and neutralises part of the stomach acid, which prevents excessive hyperacidity and digestive disorders.
