Biotin
Biotin (also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H) can be produced by the horse, like the other B vitamins, via the colon flora. If the gut flora is disturbed, if the horse suffers from liver problems or watery droppings, or if it receives a lot of silage, a deficiency can occur. Biotin has essential functions in the horse’s fat and sugar metabolism. It is also significantly involved in the formation of keratin, an important substance in hair and hooves.
B vitamins are, for example, abundant in brewer’s yeast and brewer’s grains. A biotin supplement can, for example, support horses with a tendency towards cracked hooves and soft hoof horn.
