Sodium
Sodium and chlorine or chloride (ions), which are ingested as sodium chloride (table salt), are important electrolytes. They have essential functions for communication between body cells and are indispensable for regulating the water and acid-base balance of the cells. As they are lost through sweat, the requirement for both elements increases accordingly during physical exertion.
The daily requirement varies depending on performance and sweat volume, ranging from 3 g (maintenance requirement) up to 80 g (during high performance with over 20 litres of sweat) for a warmblood. In addition to green fodder, salt licks, loose salt and electrolyte products help to ensure an adequate supply.
