Dried apple pomace
Dried apple pomace is a crude fibre-rich, low-protein, palatable and reduced-sugar ingredient that is used both in pellets and loose in muesli for horses. Apple pomace refers to the solid components of apples that remain after apple juice production. An apple consists of approximately 85% water. When the sweet apple juice has been pressed out, the peel components, the pectin-containing cells of the flesh, the digestion-supporting core, etc. remain.
The high pectin content supplies the gut wall with energy and binds excess water. An intact gut wall, in turn, can protect the body from pathogens or toxins. The breakdown of pectins in the colon supports a healthy gut biome and the microflora.
On the myth that apple pomace can be metabolised into caffeine, Dr. Annette Zeyner, Professor of Animal Nutrition at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, writes:
“Apple pomace, in a product purity that is to be expected and required for a feedstuff, contains, with near certainty, no caffeine, nor can constituents of apple pomace be converted into caffeine in the gastrointestinal tract or intermediary metabolism of horses in an order of magnitude relevant to doping.”
