Linseed extraction meal
Linseeds are the seeds of flax. There are two types of flax. Fibre flax is grown for fibre linen production. Oil flax is grown for oil production (linseeds). Linseed oil is pressed from the linseeds and also obtained by extraction. With hot pressing of linseed oil, approximately 1 litre of linseed oil can be obtained from 4 kg of linseeds.
After extraction, a protein-rich meal remains, which is popular as a protein feed due to its high nutritional value and good taste. The protein content in linseed extraction meal is approximately 38%. In horse feeding, linseed extraction meal is used in feed types that require higher levels of easily digestible and palatable protein, such as senior feed.
Linseed extraction meal should not be confused with ground linseed, which turns rancid more quickly.
