Sugar beet pulp
Sugar beet pulp, also known as molassed sugar beet pulp, is a by-product of sugar production from sugar beet. At the sugar factory, the beets are cleaned and cut into narrow strips (pulp), and most of the sugar is extracted using hot water. After this process, the sugar content of the beet pulp is only around 10 to 20 percent.
Beet pulp is very popular in horse feeding as a source of crude fibre and energy. The pectin contained in beet pulp has a beneficial effect on the colon flora. Beet pulp is also rich in calcium and potassium. It is low in protein and phosphorous and is usually incorporated into muesli pellets. If fed on its own, it must be soaked, as it swells very significantly.
