Glycogen
Glycogen is the body’s own storage substance for glucose and is also referred to as “animal starch”. It is built up in liver and muscle cells when there is a surplus of carbohydrates. When the body’s energy requirements increase, the glycogen stored in the liver is broken down again into glucose and made available to the organism. Muscle cells, on the other hand, use glycogen exclusively to cover their own energy requirements.
