Grain-free
Grain contains a lot of starch. The horse’s body converts this into (blood) sugar. Depending on the horse’s age, state of health and workload, grain-free feeding can therefore be advisable to avoid excessively high blood sugar levels and being overweight. Horses with metabolic problems such as PSSM, EMS or Cushing’s should generally be fed grain-free. As an alternative, they are fed fibre mixes which, depending on energy requirements, contain oil as an energy source or can be supplemented with oil.
