Chopped alfalfa
Alfalfa is a nutrient-rich legume and roughage plant with a high proportion of leaves. The stalks are relatively hard and firm. The valuable nutrients, such as the high protein content, the essential amino acids, the very high calcium content, β-carotene and magnesium etc. are found mainly in the leaves (see alfalfa).
Depending on the feeding purpose, either the fibre-rich stalks with little leaf mass are used mainly to stimulate chewing activity and saliva production, or the complete alfalfa plant.
More recent studies indicate that larger quantities of hard-stalked chopped alfalfa can be problematic. In the area of the stomach outlet, they are suspected of causing injuries to the gastric mucosa. For sensitive horses, soft chopped hay is therefore recommended as an alternative to stimulate chewing activity.
