Overview C
Colostrum
The immune system of a newborn foal cannot yet produce antibodies against pathogens. It receives these antibodies (immunoglobulins), as well as important proteins, vitamins and minerals via the mare’s first milk in the first 4-8 hours after birth. This milk is called colostrum.
The immunoglobulin content in the protein of the colostrum is around 30-60% in the first hours and already drops to 2% after 24 hours. If no colostrum is available to the foal in the first hours of life, the marstall Fohlen-Not-Paket foal emergency pack with colostrum substitute as a dry powder can help. In addition, a veterinarian must (!) be consulted.
