Metabolism
Metabolism takes place in a living cell at every moment. Metabolism refers to the totality of life-sustaining processes involved in the conversion of substances (e.g. nutrients) into intermediate products (metabolites) and end products within the organism of living beings. Whether it be a single-celled organism, a bacterium, or a plant, animal or human cell – metabolism is a characteristic of living cells. The biochemical transformation processes of metabolism involve the synthesis, breakdown and maintenance of bodily tissue and serve to generate energy for energy-consuming activities.
Metabolic processes sustain bodily functions and therefore the life of the organism. Enzymes play a central role in metabolism by bringing about (catalysing) or influencing biochemical reactions. Virtually every biochemical reaction in metabolism is carried out and controlled by enzymes.
