MSM
MSM is the abbreviation for methylsulfonylmethane – also known as dimethyl sulfone. This organic sulphur compound can supply the body with valuable natural sulphur.
Sulphur is a vital element and is often underestimated. The body is not always supplied with the necessary amount through feed. Sulphur is an indispensable component of many of the body’s own substances, such as enzymes, hormones (e.g. insulin), glutathione (an endogenous antioxidant) and many vital amino acids (e.g. cysteine, methionine, taurine).
If sulphur is lacking, glutathione – one of the strongest antioxidants in the body – cannot do its work. The body suffers increasingly from oxidative stress and the body’s own defences no longer function properly. Horses then become susceptible to infections, inflammation and even signs of wear. Intensive athletic performance “uses up” or reduces glutathione and antioxidant enzymes. MSM can fill the resulting gap here. MSM is used above all for its beneficial properties regarding the airways, stomach, skin and joints.
