Milk thistle
Milk thistle (silybum marianum) originates from the Mediterranean region and other warm regions. It can also be found in Germany, although with lower levels of the valuable silymarin.
Milk thistle belongs to the daisy family. Its active ingredient silymarin is found in the ripe fruit (particularly in the husk) and, in part, in the oil as well. As early as mediaeval monastery gardens, it was cultivated as a “liver plant”, and today its positive effect is considered well established following intensive research.
Silymarin is commonly used to support the regeneration and function of the liver. Its constituents combat free radicals, help defend against the penetration of toxins in cases of poisoning and support the liver’s natural metabolism as a whole.
Please note that commercially available thistle oil is obtained from safflower and does not possess the positive properties described.
